Customer Rating I finally own a SONY HD LCD!, 2011-04-28
This review is from: Sony BRAVIA KDL40BX420
This Sony LCD is one of the best deals anyone is going to get. Like the other guy mentioned, I purchased mine directly from WalMart for $588! The image quality is outstanding. I have made a few tweaks like lowering the brightness, to help achieve deeper blacks. I will use a image calibrator later. The screen does have a slight glow at the top corners, but that is only visible during extremely rare black-out scenes. I noticed it while loading Blu-Rays, but once the movie starts the screen is very vibrant! The sound quality is not all that refined. I don’t have money for an Audio system or receiver so I will just have to fiddle with the settings like bass and treble till I find the optimum tune. There are plenty of A/V connections, a plethora of options in the menue to fool around with, and a great remote. I have a PlayStation 3 hooked up by HDMI cable. That allows the system remotes to control devices, very cool! Go buy one!!!

Customer Rating Sony Bravia = Awesome!, 2011-08-20
This review is from: Sony BRAVIA KDL40BX420
I just replaced a 32 inch Toshiba with this 40 inch Sony KDLBX420 and I am on cloud nine. After a little calibration (the factory settings on TV’s are always lousy) it looks amazing. I have it hooked up to my PS3 via hdmi and it’s like I’m in a movie theater when watching Blu-Rays. Sound from the speakers is just fine but lets face it, you want a proper sound system. But this one is adequate for built in speakers on an LCD. Games look amazing too. During really dark scenes you’ll notice a tiny backlight bleed in the four corners. This is an inherent flaw in LCD technology and pretty much all brands suffer from it to some degree from Panasonic, to Samsung. to Toshiba. Other than that this LCD is simply awesome. You cannot go wrong with this purchase.

  • Customer Rating still undecided but audio is lacking, 2011-07-16
This review is from: Sony BRAVIA KDL40BX420
Got this unit to replace my old really beloved Sony 32″ Trinitron……….a great unit, one of the nicest I’ve ever owned. The hi power transformer is gone and it takes a day or so to turn on after power is interrupted or shut off.
So, I easily unpacked and set up the unit for my BR. Going to use it only for watching DVD’s, (tapes, yup still got ’em) and cable/dish. Picture seems a bit fuzzy compared to my other two Bravias, a 46″ and a 32″. My major compalint is the audio. While it is clear, the decible level on the high setting seems about 2/3 of what my other tv’s offer. Of 99 numbers to go up to, I need to hit almost 70 for just ordinary casual listening.) to 25 sound like mute. Heaven forbid I want to listen to a concert and hit it up somewhat, that will non-existant. Since it is in my BR, surround sound is a touch impractical, I probably will have to get a sound bar, an unwanted extra cost and piece. The price is right, however.
    Somewhat disappointed in Sony here.

Customer Rating Nice tv and good looking., 2011-05-17
This review is from: Sony BRAVIA KDL40BX420
I really like this TV. It is an entry level Sony model but is adequate for my needs. I was looking for a 40″ on a $600 budget. I went with Sony because I knew they are well made and last. Other models in the same price range, such as Toshiba or Vizio had more features, but I was unsure of their long term viability.

I watched Tron blu-ray on this TV last week and the picture was great. I also like the look of this TV it is very sleek looking and all black. Some of the other Sony models are two tone black and grey, which I don’t like much.

I have had plasma’s in the past, but went with LCD as I have a PS3 hooked up. LCD’s just work better for video games and there is no fear of burning the image on the screen.

If you are looking for a 40″ TV on a budget, then I highly recommend this. If you have more $$$ to spend, then I would say spend $1000 and get one with 120 or 240hz refresh rate.

  • Customer Rating Not sure if this might have been damaged in shipping, but the picture was unwatchable, 2011-07-12
This review is from: Sony BRAVIA KDL40BX420
I ordered this T.V. on the 1st of July and it finally arrived on the 11th of July. Shipped via UPS ground. The box it arrived in was a little beat up. The bottom of the box looked like it had been improperly taped or the tape melted off at the seam, but the bottom of the box was 1/2 way open.

I should have just refused it, but I had been waiting so long I thought I’d check it out. I put it together, hooked up cable T.V., a DVD player, and Roku which streams Netflix.

I turned it on and after it found all the available channels, the first t.v. station appeared. I was floored that the picture was quite blurry and washed out and that any writing on the screen was also blurry. I cleaned my glasses but it was still blurry. I wrangled with all the settings and noticed a sharpness setting. When I adjusted this, the blurry got sharper, not the text.

I then tried watching Netflix off of the Roku and was really disappointed that even the HD programming came in poorly. Watching a standard resolution movie was much worse. Lots of blur and artifacts. So, on to the DVD. Same blurry washed out picture.

I really don’t know if this is just a poor quality T.V. or if it was somehow damaged in shipping. Thanks to Amazon’s fantastic return policy, UPS is picking up the T.V. today.

UPDATE: 7/21/2011 — I’ve upgraded my rating to 3 stars based on comments from a few folks. I now know that the problem with this T.V. was due to poor shipping conditions.

This comes under the heading of “Word to the Wise” advise. So, it’s July 21st, and I’ve finally received my refund on this T.V. Yes, Amazon has an amazing return policy, but the only drawback is that you’ll have to wait a long time to receive your refund.

Also, I live in Palm Springs which regularly reaches 110 in the summer time. I think this may have also contributed to the rough condition of this T.V. If you’re ordering something in the summer and choose Free Super Saver shipping, understand that your T.V. will be traveling on a UPS truck for at least five days. UPS trucks are not air conditioned so your T.V. is subject to baking in a big brown oven. I would strongly suggest spending a few bucks and upgrading to 2-day shipping. Also, right now, Amazon is offering a free 30 day trial of their Amazon Prime service which includes free 2-day shipping on all purchases. In addition they offer one day shipping for just $3.99 per item. I realize this sounds like a plug for Amazon Prime. It isn’t. It’s simply a suggestion for folks who want to avoid the potential for a damaged T.V. sitting on a UPS truck for many days.

  • Customer Rating Nice TV but sounds is not great, 2011-04-21
This review is from: Sony BRAVIA KDL40BX420
I was using 10 year old TV tube, so for me this is the first big LCD TV ever, thus comparison is not going to be fair!

I wanted something with good image quality, reliable and within budget for apartment. Looking at various TVs, I knew that I wanted Sony for image quality and potentially can go for Samsung. My primary viewing is cable, DVDs etc. no sports, thus no need for 120 or 240 Hz and did not wanted to pay for it. So based on my criteria this was the best option – based on brand, image quality, price point, size etc.

On receiving, it took 10 mins to set it up and get running. Few tunings got what I wanted. But biggest problem has been sound quality. It has 4 options – Mono, Custom, Adaptive etc.. each sounds different as expected but none seemed satisfactory. Some were too high etc. I am sure it can be reduced by changing few parameters but I am not sure it will give clear sound as I expected. I plan to put speaker system, so hopefully it will become non-issue. So if you plan to use TV directly then go and check in some store personally for sounds quality.

I did check few places online and ordered from Amazon, but when I visited my local Walmart they are carrying it for ~580, so with tax it would cost the same. Some how, their online store shows same cost as Amazon. I am not sure what was going on but do check local store before ordering.

Customer Rating very happy with purchase, 2011-08-16
This review is from: Sony BRAVIA KDL40BX420
I bought this to replace a sony 2002 model 32 inch plasma that I thought had a good picture. After receiving this and setting it up the picture just blew me away! I have had many sony tvs over the years and have been happy with them all and this one is no exception. Great quality and sturdy stand so the tv does not seem unstable at all, unlike another tv (vizio) which I was considering purchasing until I actually saw how unstable their stands seemed to be. The only thing lacking is the sound quality, although very adequate, you will still need a good home theater system to bring this rv to its full potential. I have mine paired with a sony 5.1 home theater system and it is absolutely perfect. One other little nitpick, when starting it up it takes about 15-20 seconds for it to boot up so to speak, but that is minor. Also I must comment on the service from Amazon. Ordered this on Friday afternoon and Monday afternoon it was delivered, even with super saver shipping which they said takes 5-8 days. It arrived in absolutely perfect condition with no dings or scratches on the box. Don’t hesitate to buy this tv, it is a great bargain for the price.

I spent about a month researching different TV’s before I finally settled on this one. The price was great, especially for a good brand like Sony, and the product did not disappoint! Quick delivery, easy setup, and great picture quality! I would recommend this TV to anyone.

Customer Rating Awesome TV but you’ll want a sound system, 2011-05-15
This review is from: Sony BRAVIA KDL40BX420
After researching Bravia TVs, I decided to go ahead with this one since it is one of the newer releases for 2011. I’m glad I waited, as this TV is clearer and more vivid than those of some older models or rival brands. Picture quality is clear with no fog or motion blur. PS3 games and Netflix look absolutely amazing. The only thing this TV needs now is a sound system to broaden the audio experience. If you’re having sound issues, try messing around with the ‘steady sound’ and ‘clear voice’ options to even things out and make them less muddy.

In stores you may see this TV’s picture slightly less bright than others, but that is because of the built in light sensor that’s located on the front of the frame. The picture automatically adjusts to best fit it’s surroundings, and that’s what’s truly great. No fussing with brightness settings all the time.

Overall, worth every penny. Stick with Sony and you won’t be disappointed.
