The traditional types of back-lighting used on LCD televisions are called CCFL back-lighted LCD televisions. There is also a type of back-lighting that uses LED light and it is vastly superior to CCFL models. What many do not realize is that there are actually many different types of LED lit LCD televisions as well.

What are edge LEDs?

This type of LED back-lighting is used most commonly in LCD televisions, and it is the type of lighting that allows flat screens to be thin and flat. They use a panel to diffuse the light and spread it evenly. This is the most popular type of LED lit LCD HDTV.

What are full array LEDs?

These are a exactly what the sound like – a full array of LEDs that are lined up behind the panel. They can’t be adjusted individually for brightness and are very vivid and colorful. This is a popular style of television as well. The darker colors are not as dark as they would be in a RGB dynamic LED.

What about RGB dynamic LEDs?

This shows extreme details in the darker areas of the picture, while losing a bit of detail in the bright areas. You gain a bit with RGB in the dark areas while losing a bit on the light. Each of these types of LED offers a specific advantage in this area. RGB stands for red, green and blue colors. This allows the television to have around twice the gamut of color range than other types.

Why go with LED back-lighting anyway?

With LED lit LCD HDTVs, you get a much more dynamic contrast in colors on the screen. Your picture is noticeably better than with CCFL models. The colors are much more wide ranging than they are in CCFL models, and they are generally a better picture overall as well. They eat up less power, and generally are more environmentally friendly.

LED lit televisions are almost always thinner, and can be displayed easily and conveniently. This is a popular feature of any flat screen television, and a selling point to be sure. These televisions are also more reliable as the lights last longer and cost less to repair. When you get rid of the television, it will be more environmentally friendly to dispose of.

What about cost?

While LED LCD HDTV models are going to generally cost you more money, you will find that you are getting your money’s worth in the bargain. Do not be afraid to spend the extra money, as you will get a good return on your investment. If you buy the wrong model but get it cheaper, you will end up spending more in the long run.

Regardless of which type of LED back-lighting you choose, you should know that you are getting a better television than the standard CCFL models that are out there. Each of the different types have advantages, and you simply need to decide which ones fit your situation and tastes the best.
