    Customer Rating Review, 2011-08-18
This review is from: Toshiba 55SL417U 55-Inch
I don’t normally write reviews which may make me a bad Amazon user, as I rely so much on others’ reviews, but I want to let any one considering this TV what I think so they can make a better decision. The reason I chose this TV was the size-to-price value, you would be hard pressed to find something in this size for a better price. I read the reviews of the sound quality being terrible and I can confirm this. TVs this large are not meant to be used with the stock speakers, the manufacturer saved some money cutting the sound quality but I get the feeling the savings are passed on to the consumer. I purchased a VIZIO VSB200 Universal HD Sound Bar to accompany my purchase and it has worked out great. I won’t take off one star for audio like so people have because I knew what to expect coming into the product. Picture quality is great, I put on Avatar in 1080P and the picture was stunning. The screen is so large standard cable with co-axial is a bit pixelated but not too badly. The picture settings are detailed but not overly in depth. I am not a videophile but I am very impressed.

I have Netflix on my Xbox360 but having it on the TV is even better. Just one button and I am browsing for movies. I have set up a DNLA server on my computer (Mediatomb) and use it to stream video to TV and that function works great and is very easy to set up. The only video file it does not support so far is a .mkv in 1080P.

I hope this review helps out.

Customer Rating A great buy, 2011-08-01
This review is from: Toshiba 55SL417U 55-Inch
I bought this TV after Best Buy (having already screwed me around for 30 minutes) told me they didn’t have the TV I was looking at in stock, so I got on Amazon and got this one (and HDMI cables for 1/4 the cost). Waiting for it felt like waiting for Christmas and probably added some value, but then it didn’t show up on time. After a call to the shipper I finally got it and have been watching for the last week (so keep an eye on your tracking progress). I had no problems when it arrived and it was in perfect shape and ready to go right out of the box, opened the box plugged it in and plugged in the HDMI.

It is truly a great TV, for this price, especially for LED-LCD technology, I couldn’t be happier. I can’t speak to the variety of inputs it accepts as I’m running through an HDMI receiver, this goes for the TV’s speakers as well as it’s hooked up to surround sound. I have watched Planet Earth on BluRay through a PS3 and it looked stunning. I also watched Quantum of Solace and the darker scenes were very clear and action sequences looked awesome as well, really impressed with the quality and don’t feel that I’m missing anything on this TV that I could’ve had with TV’s that cost twice as much. That says it all right there.

Gaming is also impressive, no ghosting or delay anywhere, I’m not a huge gamer but I was able to do some damage on Call of Duty online. Maybe I’ll be able to keep up with my 15 year old brother on this new screen but I doubt it, still it’s a great gaming experience on this set.

  • Customer Rating Nice Set for the Money,Overall., 2011-09-03
This review is from: Toshiba 55SL417U 55-Inch
My wife and I got this set from Amazon in July 2011.It was simple to set up and had an excellent picture using the factory default settings right out of its shipping carton although there are menu upon menu of adjustments you can tweak if that is your heart’s desire. This set has Energy star certification and has low power consumption for an HDTV of this size. The set is of the sleek thin bezel design and is only an inch and a half thick at it’s thickest points. The least satisfying feature of this set is the volume produced by it’s internal speaker system.Like some others have said the sound produced is pitifully low. In plain English,it sucks. That being said,if you are into home theater this isn’t a concern but if you’re not you are in for a big shock unless you are a fan of closed captions.A supplemental sound system is a must with a set of this design.Home theater, sound bar, whatever. You are going to need one so bear this in mind .We love the set now that our home theater is here.

This is a good TV. The internet functionality is not easy to use with the remote, Im sure you can add a wireless keyboard, but haven’t tried to yet. the sound is NOT good at all, but i purchased a sound bar and it’s fine now. Overall, I’m happy with the purchase.

  • Customer Rating Great Picture, Poor Sound, 2011-08-22
This review is from: Toshiba 55SL417U 55-Inch
I have to agree with other consumers that the sound on this is a sad joke. It is nice that it is a thin TV (Though remarkably heavy), but it is just embarrassing to have such a nice TV that sounds like it has a cellphone on speaker taped to the back of it. With that said, having only used it for a night the colors shift nearly constantly making for a confusing mix of lights and dark as you watch (I am sure there is a setting to fix this). The internet apps were pretty cool and set up was easy. The picture is simply amazing.

For those of you who have never hooked up a cable box to HDMI with limited high def programming, be aware that you have two options (So far as I know):

    1. Watch your non-HD TV shows in a small picturebox setting with big old black bars on the side or

    2. Plug your cable box in through HDMI and through old school AV cables and watch only high def content through HDMI.

There could be another setting for this, but I don’t know what it is.

I am looking for suggestions as to a nice soundbar to use in place of the internal TV speakers as they are just not usable. It looks like I am going to have to pay another 250 dollars at least. 🙁 I have read a lot about Panasonic and Sony having soundbars that integrate very well with their TVs, but no such luck for Toshiba. I am not sure if I would buy this TV knowing exactly how bad the sound is. If you have a surround sound system, it is an easy choice to buy. If not… well, know you are going to have to purchase a sound system. If someone has a suggestion for a good inexpensive soundbar, let me know. I am surprised that there isn’t one in the “frequently bought together” section, there will be soon I am sure.

Customer Rating Good picture. Bad internet., 2011-08-08
This review is from: Toshiba 55SL417U 55-Inch
I’ve had this TV for about a month now. The picture quality is very good. It’s also a nice looking TV. For the price, I think it’s a great deal. The problem, however, is that the internet connectivity just doesn’t work well at all. It doesn’t really bother me, since I have other devices that can stream netflix and other services. Plus, the 55sl412u, which is the model without internet connectivity, is actually more expensive.

I’m actually on my second TV. I ended up exchanging through Amazon. Unfortunately, the second TV has the same problem that the first one did. The issue is that whenever I connect the TV to the internet, the controls will completely freeze after a few minutes. The TV stops responding to the remote and to inputs on the panel itself. The only thing it will do is turn off after 15 seconds if I press the power key. Connecting over wireless makes the TV stop responding much more quickly than over ethernet. Sometimes it might last an hour or so over ethernet. Over wireless, it will generally stop responding to any commands within 5-10 minutes. If I disconnect the TV from the internet, I have no problems.

The firmware on both TVs was the 1.1.12 firmware that you’ll get if you update the firmware from the TV. I don’t know if there is some sort of bug in the firmware, or if the chipset is just faulty, but if you buy this TV, don’t count on the internet connectivity actually working.

Bottom Line: It’s a great TV for the price. Great picture. Great price. Don’t count on the internet stuff actually working. I’d give it 3.5 stars if I could, but I just can’t give it 4 without the advertised features working correctly.

Customer Rating Fantastic deal, no regrets!, 2011-07-15
This review is from: Toshiba 55SL417U 55-Inch
I recently bought this TV to replace (like so many others) a Mitsubishi DLP. I wasn’t interested in a top of the line TV – to me LED wasn’t a priority, nor was 3D. I simply wanted a good priced, quality LCD that would properly produce clear HD 1080p resolution. When I came across this TV I was very hesitant to place the order, as there were simply no reviews anywhere. At the size and price it seemed too good to be true. After a few weeks of enjoying the TV I can happily report that I have not been disappointed at all!

However, this TV is certainly not for the hard core techies out there. If you’re the type to worry about comparing contrast ratios, refresh rates, and 3D then this probably won’t satisfy your needs. Although this TV is listed as an LED, the picture produced is really just a true LCD resolution. You won’t get the overly realistic “soap opera effect” that LEDs have, which quite honestly I don’t enjoy that much to begin with, except for watching sports. If you’re interested in simply producing quality HD picture, then all you really need is 1080p/120hz, and thats exactly what this TV delivers – clear, crisp HD with no blur. Also, the built in wifi is great. It picked up my home wireless signal right away and Netflix and Youtube come in perfectly, and in HD when available. Another extremely pleasant surprise about this TV is its thinness! It is shockingly thin, it easily compares with the Samsung UN-series LED’s. When the Amazon delivery guys took it out of the box for assembly they couldn’t stop talking about how thin it was – it simply looks like the price should be 3 times as much just for that alone.

The only con, and for many it will be a big con, is the sound. While shopping around I’d read alot of reviews on other TVs about the sound being terrible, comparing them to clock radios and ipod speakers. I couldn’t imagine a huge TV producing such poor qualilty sound, and I tended to dismiss these bad reviews as probably coming from tech geeks and audiophiles with the highest standards. However, I can now sympathize with those reviews. The sound on this TV really can be compared to a pair of ipod speakers. It’s not really about the loudness (which is on the low side), but its simply about the quality. The sound is very weak and shallow, with no bass whatsoever. Fortunately I have a Sony home theater system, but if I didn’t I would definitely have bought one or a sound bar. That being said, at this price you can still go out and buy a great speaker system and you’ll still being saving alot of money.

I’d also like to plug the Amazon store card for those that dont know. I signed up for the card just to buy this TV. It gives you the option to finance the TV for 24 months at no interest. So if I choose to go the full 24 months, thats only $52/month to own a 55″ LED-LCD. Simply an amazing deal!

I hope this review helps those like me who are looking for a quality 55″ LCD at a great price. Trust me, this TV will not disappoint!

Customer Rating Great price for the rich features, 2011-07-31
This review is from: Toshiba 55SL417U 55-Inch
We had been looking for a 55-inch LED TV for a while, but the prices for most models were kind of high, in the $1500 range. We were thinking to wait for a little longer for the price to go down. Then I found this one, which is several hundred dollars less than comparable models from other manufactures. I was a little shocked by the price (thought I wouldn’t see a price in this range until Christmas or Thanksgiving). We have been enjoying this TV for the past couple of weeks without any single problem. This TV is very thin as expected, just like other LED TVs. The sound could be a concern to some people, but I think it is an unavoidable issue for most LED TVs due to the thickness as well as the desire to hide the speakers. Who cares since most of us have an extra sound system (be it a simple sound bar or a home theater system). The picture quality is very good. It give us all crispy pictures with a good contrast. The only minor issue is the Dynal Light feature, which is supposed to adjust the brightness of the screen according to the environment. I found this feature not stable, with frequently changed brightness which is a bit annoying. So I simply turned off the feature. I also like the built-in wireless connection to the Internet. The connection to our home Internet gateway was a piece of cake for no-brainers. With the Internet features, it is very easy to enjoy stream videos from many popular sites including YouTube, Netflix and more. Overall, I would like to give the highest rating to this TV for its superb performance at such a ridiculously low price.

Customer Rating WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FOR THE PRICE?!?!, 2011-09-08
This review is from: Toshiba 55SL417U 55-Inch
I didn’t purchase this TV through Amazon (sorry) but thought I’d give my opinion to help Amazon out. I picked this TV up at a local retailer on sale for $999. The wifey said “take it for that price!” (which was a shocker in itself!!!) It was $1299+ everywhere else and I didn’t want to buy one online because if I didn’t like it I had the option of taking it back to the store and not having to ship it back. It’s a nice looking TV for the price.
Yeah, the sound totally sucks but if you’re buying a TV for the sound then there’s something wrong with you!!!
Bad sound can easily be fixed with a sound bar. Bad video can’t. I’m not a videophile person but the picture looked like all the other $1200-$1500 55″ LEDs that I’d seen and it also has built in Wi-Fi, Skype, Netflix etc. Blu-Ray movies look awesome and DirecTV HD programming as well. No complaints here…it was a steal for $999!!! I pretty much got what I paid for…and then some. The 4 stars is because of the sound only.
