Customer Rating 2011 Model – Budget Friendly Price – Great Picture Quality, 2011-03-18
This review is from: Samsung LN40D550 40-Inch
I purchased this TV for an elderly family member who’s 2 year old 42″ Dynex took a dump.

The Samsung is much more aesthetically pleasing and the picture quality is definitely more crisp and clear than her old Dynex.

The TV is extremely easy to set up…all you need is a #2 philips screwdriver and maybe an additional person to lift the TV and place it on the base.

For 2011, Samsung redesigned the remote control and the buttons are much easier to use (compared to the 2010 models). The remote is extremely long and odd shaped, but it fits comfortably in my hand.

Menu options are plentiful which makes the customization process a breeze. Samsung’s definitely have the most options from what I have seen.

All in all, this is a nice TV and should be more than sufficient for what it is being used for.

I have purchased this TV for $629 at Wallmart, so I did not have high expectation, though I did chose Samsung, because I generally like their displays.

I am really impressed by the quality of this product. Everything is great. There are lots of options to tweak, the colors are amazing, the sound is very, very good for this quite thin TV, there are lots of input (4 hdmi, 2 USB, 2 components, etc…), have nice energy saving options, and even 480i looks much nicer than on other LCDs I have tested. I honestly did not expect this for $629.

    The only possible issues are:
    1) The black becomes dark blue if viewed from the angle. This is common problem for LCDs, and I think that as LCD TV goes, it is very minor effect (it is very even dark blue background, noticeable when you view TV at around 30 degree of axis), but some other TVs (like plasma or projection TVs) do not have it by design.
    2) While piano black design is very nice to look at, if you have source of light behind you, you will see some reflection from the edge of the screen, which may be a bit destructing. True, though, if you watch TV, you should not have sources of light behind you anyway, still, this may be a small factor on your choice of the TV.
    3) This is 60Hz model, so, for fast moving images this is not the best TV (consider 120Hz ones, but it costs $$)

That’s it! The negatives did not cost a star, so 5 stars for TV this price.
The rest are all positives! Samsung really does it quite well with this TV.

We love this TV, our first LCT HDTV – there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, and the price is right too. We couldn’t be happier with it.

  • Customer Rating Great TV!, 2011-08-15

I shopped around and looked at various models in local stores. This TV came through as the winner. The picture stood out at the Best Buy wall of TV’s. It also has multiple connections (USB, HDMI, etc.). It is a very good value. The menu system and channel guide is really nice. I don’t have cable, but I am getting great reception via an attic antenna. All channels are crystal clear and the sound is very good. For reference, I have this ina small room, so I am not asking much of the sound level. But the sound quality is great. The TV was packaged in the factory box, but it seemed to be packed well and made teh trip just fine. This is my first Samsung product and I am impressed so far.

Customer Rating Great basic TV – LCD, 2011-06-28

I needed to replace my old Samsung 30 inch picture TV (it was a slim line HDTV 1080i) when it broke. This went into my bedroom, and didn’t need anything fancy. The 40 inch TV is perfect. The color and detail are terrific. What is also nice is that it ‘knows’ when I turn on my Sony Blu Ray player.

Well worth the price, although like everything else, prices continue to fall, and you can probably get a 120 Hz and even larger screen size for a comparable price. I am partial to Samsung, and think it is a great set. Color, sound, ease of use, internet connectivity, streaming over my network. Nice.

This is worth the price. Better than Sony Bravia. Power cable is short – Could have been 2-4 ft longer.

Got this for my master bedroom. It is excellent. Got a great price from amazon. Arrived quickly. Looks better than my higher priced Sony in the tv room. Can’t beat a Samsung tv for quality, even the lower end models.

Customer Rating Samsung 40″ LCD HDTV, 2011-06-12
This review is from: Samsung LN40D550 40-Inch
I have had a Samsung TV in the past actually this one replaced the one I had before. The quality of Samsung is still among the best for televisions that I have seen. I looked around for a lot of televisions and when this one dropped down to the right price it was a no brainer. This TV has exceeded my expectations in picture quality and functions that come with it. If you are looking for a good 40″ and not ready to go into LED or 120hz then this is the television for you. I tried an LED/120hz LG TV once and it was just weird looking, kind of hard to explain which is why I chose a non LED TV. Again this television is a really good one and worth the money.

Customer Rating Excellent with a caveat, 2011-04-24
This review is from: Samsung LN40D550 40-Inch
I did a lot of research before deciding on this Samsung. I paired it with Google TV (using Logitech Revue), and NOW everything works like a charm, but neither the three salesmen I spoke with at Best Buy, nor the installers from Best Buy, nor any of the previous reviews I read informed me that you can’t access the Internet with this TV UNLESS you also buy the Samsung LAN Adapter. Not a big deal (it’s about $80), but that would have been nice to know before I spent several hours wondering why my Internet-accessible TV was not accessing the Internet.

Customer Rating Perfect bedroom TV, 2011-09-05
This review is from: Samsung LN40D550 40-Inch
In 2009, I purchased a 46 inch Samsung 46B650 LCD for my family room and I loved this TV so naturally I got this 40 inch Samsung LCD for the bedroom in 2011. Samsung LED are better but I could not justified the cost difference and I rather put the cost difference in a larger LCD screen size. This 5 series has the great picture quality similar to my 6 series that is 2 years old. Here are my calibration settings:
    Mode: Dynamic
    Backlight: 10
    Contrast: 100
    Brightness: 45
    Sharpness: 55
    Color: 55
    Tint: G50/R50
At these settings, the resolution is sharp, the colors are deep and not washed out, and the picture is like eye candy to watch. The sound is also better than expected.

I was surprised that when Vann shipped my TV, the shipper left it at my front door without my signature. Lucky for me nobody walked off with it.

My only complaint is the remote control on how to access my favorite channels. You can create five sets of favorite channels to cover news, sports, public TV, etc but there is no favorite buttons. For example: To access my favorite sport channels you have to (1) press the “CH List” button, (2) press arrow button to favorite number 3 which is my sports channels. (3) press enter and this changes the up and down channel buttons for me to surf my sports channels. They should program the A, B, C, D buttons to do this automatically. I took one star off because of this.

However, the picture quality is great and for under $580, I am satisfied with this TV. I recommend this TV over any other TV at this price.
